Students at West Salem High School are raising money for a good cause: Cancer.  Organized by West Salem’s Youth Frontiers, the fundraiser’s goal is to raise four-thousand dollars for the American Cancer Society.

Last year, West Salem students raised over seven-thousand dollars in the fundraiser exceeding their initial goal of twenty-five hundred dollars. This year, however, the goal has been set to four thousand dollars. “We found that by incentivising fundraisers it gives students more of a reason to donate,” said Ryan Nelson, an advisor of the Youth Frontiers group. Of the many incentives offered to the students, some include teachers participating in the Blazing Wing Challenge at Buffalo Wild Wings, Principal Josh Mallicoat getting dunked in a dunk tank, and Vice-Principal, Mike Malott kissing a pig.

“Youth Frontiers provides a great opportunity for seniors to make a positive impact on their school,” said senior Zach Ihle. “We decided to move our ACS fundraiser closer to the date of Relay for Life to hopefully attract more students to the relay. We have worked really hard to think, and provide, as many incentives as possible to have the most successful fundraiser possible,” he added.

In an effort to help raise more money West Salem’s National Honor Society chapter delivered pizzas for the Pizza Oven on Sunday, April 2, from 5-9pm. Durning this time they raised $450,  “We hope to raise even more money by delivering pizzas for Pizza Oven, and thanks to their generosity, we know it will be a successful event! It’s a really great way for all of us NHS members to get involved with the fundraising and have fun while we do it,” said Senior NHS member Molly Hunter.

All of the money that is raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society during an assembly on April 7th, just hours before West Salem’s Relay for Life Event that will occur that night.
