An exciting time in every high schooler’s life is the day they get their drivers license. It symbolizes freedom and growth as they step into a new chapter of their life. However, as many people become more comfortable behind the wheel, they become more easily distracted. They fall victim to texting, playing music, looking at dogs; anything but driving. The National Safety Council recognizes April as Distracted Driving Awareness month. In honor of that, I’d like to offer you a few tips to staying safe on the road.

  1. Limit the number of passengers in your car. The more conversation happening, the harder it is to focus on driving.
  2. Avoid eating while driving. Instead of going through the drive thru go inside, or park somewhere.
  3. Do not drive if you are drowsy. If you are too tired to drive ask someone else to drive you, perhaps a friend or a parent.
  4. Leave your phone in the glove box. Leave your phone in a safe place in case of emergency, but keep it out of sight to avoid temptation.
  5. Most importantly take your time. Your entire goal of driving is to arrive safely at your destination so take your time and pay attention.
